How I got my sleep back ?

Insomnia was something which took over my life for more than 3 years. I have successfully come out of it and I would love to share how I did it. This healing was one of the most challenging ones anyone can ever go through. Insomnia put a physical and mental toll on me. I was helpless and all I knew was to try hard and combat it without the use of any medication. Any problem which I have faced was always a challenge but for I knew for certain that it definitely has a solution. This is how I approached life until this very day and will continue to do so.

Sleeping at night was a luxury and no matter how much I tried it just seemed impossible. I tried all sorts of methods but my efforts were futile. First I tried to exercise 2 hours before sleeping thinking it will help me sleep but the reverse happened. I was more active than usual. So I stopped this and started my milk therapy. I drank a warm glass of milk just before sleeping. This made me a little tired but the minute I rested my head on my pillow I became wide awake again. After stopping this I then started to have a warm bath every night before bedtime but this too failed. I was already having sleeping problems for a year but could not still find a solution.

I then started to have 3 to 4 units of alcohol each night about 2 hours before bedtime and to my dismay this too did not work. The alcohol made me sleep off but I woke up in the wee hours of the morning and good not go back to sleep. Along with my alcohol consumption I lit a stick of Cuban cigar but all this pomp was up to no use. I was tired the next day but luckily I managed to get some amount of sleep while travelling to work, during lunch time and on the way back from work. My eye bags were a terrible sight but I covered it up as much as I could with good cosmetics.

Well how I put an end to this misery was simple. I discovered that nicotine 1 to 2 hours before sleep keeps the mind alert and thus makes it difficult to sleep. So I quit the bud before bed. Exercise is also something which will keep you alert so I quit that too and only worked out on weekends and that too in the early evening. Now after all this I still could not sleep. So what else did I need to weed out? What else but alcohol? This depressant unfortunately is a cause for a disturbed sleep or no sleep. Now with the help of my mp3 player which played some light music, easy reading books and magazines it was easy for me to hit the sack. Well my personal advise is to try what suits you best but remember drugs, alcohol, nicotine will never ever help you to sleep.

I found out the hard way that sleeping aids and alcohol are absolutely useless and in the long-run counterproductive. I used cognitive behavioral therapy to finally learn how to sleep again. I know, the idea that you can "forget" how to sleep sounds crazy, but it happens. Check out my detailed Hub for more information!

So you are saying that just music and reading put you to sleep? Lucky! I had to take more drastic measures.
